It’s What’s Inside That Counts

“It’s what’s inside that counts” is the latest in my series of motivational cake drawings. Doughnuts may not be the most attractive cake in the bakery, but they’re still just as delicious!

The doughnut in the mirror is intentionally smaller and not a perfect reflection of real life, to reflect how you don’t see always see yourself as you really are.

When I first drew it, the doughnut looking in the mirror looked sad too, with big, watery, tearful eyes. But that didn’t reflect the meaning of the drawing. The doughnut knows that physical appearance isn’t the most important thing, so you shouldn’t be disappointed looking in the mirror – even if what the mirror shows isn’t what you’d really like it to. It’s what’s inside that counts (delicious strawberry jam!)

Here’s the rough sketch I started from – it looks like Sumikko Gurashi! I was tempted to keep the final drawing in this style with sketchy lines and dot eyes, but decided on big-eyed, cute Cakes with Faces trademark style.
