5 Facts About Cupcakes for National Cupcake Week

It’s National Cupcake Week! There’s only one good way to celebrate: wear your Cakes with Face cake t-shirts and feast on cupcakes! We’ve collected some fun cupcake facts to read while you’re munching on cake:

1) Micro Cupcakes

The world’s smallest cupcake is said to have been created by a British bakery and is only 1.5cm wide and 3cm tall – the calorie count must be pretty low, so it’s perfect if you’re on a diet. We found some micro cakes on Imgur that were baked in thimbles and look even smaller.

2) Cake Monster

Cakezilla’s not the only cake monster. An overdose of cupcakes is what inspired H P Lovecraft to create Cthulu. He shut himself in the basement and ate cake until the sugar rush induced hallucinations about evil. He wrote in a letter: “As the 12th cake of cup sat on the downward stairwell that is my tongue a vision appeared before me as plain as I see the paper in front of myself now. A many-tentacled beast, the personification of chaos and destruction, peeking through from another universe.”

3) Emergency Mug-Cakes

Cupcakes were originally baked in individual cups instead of tray – but did you know you can make a cake in a mug using the microwave? We’ve never tried it, but it’s the quickest way to get an emergency cake – there are some recipes here. If you try them out, let us know how it goes – send us a pic on Facebook or Twitter!

4) Thank You Mr Churchill

Cupcakes used to be covered with lard instead of icing. Apparently it was Winston Churchill who suggested using sugary frosting instead (and we’re very grateful he did!)

5) Bacon and Egg Cupcake?

You can also make savoury cupcakes – we’ve never tried this, although cheese scones are pretty delicious. A bakery in Manchester serves bacon and egg cupcakes, cheesy Marmite and smoked salmon and cream cheese cupcakes.
